School-Aged Children that are Unvaccinated Due to Religious Exemption

County: Morris
Measurement Period: 2016-2017
This indicator measures the percentage of school-aged children who are unvaccinated due to exemption based on religious grounds.

Why is this important?

Vaccinations against life-threatening diseases are one of the greatest public health achievements in history. Millions of premature deaths have been prevented, and countless more children have been saved from disfiguring illness. While vaccinations carry unavoidable risks, the medical, social and economic benefits they confer have led all fifty states to enact compulsory childhood vaccination laws to stop the spread of preventable diseases.  "Herd Immunity" is when people who are not immune to a disease are protected from the disease because a large proportion of the people around them are immune from that disease.  The consequences of not vaccinating children are serious, not only for those unprotected children, but for the rest of society as well as Herd Immunity is threatened.
