Morris County has created a stigma free website, www.morriscountystimgafree.org to call attention to this initiative and provide information and resources. Stigma free communities aim to open dialogue about stigma associated with mental illness and substance use disorders, to raise awareness and create a culture where residents feel supported. The goal is to disseminate information and foster a stigma-free environment where people are free from judgment and can get the help they need to recover from disease. -

Morris County Prosecutor, Sheriff and Asst Prosecutor Honored by Morris CARES for Work on Opiod Epidemic

Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp, Sheriff James M. Gannon, and Chief Assistant Prosecutor Brad Seabury were honored this week by Morris CARES, a non-profit, recovery oriented sanctuary based in Rockaway Borough.

The trio were lauded for their efforts to educating the Morris County community about the opioid and heroin epidemic. Their partnership with Morris CARES (Center for Addiction Recovery Education & Success) has helped dissolve the stigma around drug addiction.
The Prosecutor’s Office has coordinated with the Board of Freeholders, the Sheriff’s Office, and local police departments and school districts to raise awareness about opioids and heroin. Informational meetings held at various high schools and other community venues have allowed parents to get a wealth of information from professionals.
Sheriff Gannon was recognized for his work to fight addiction and attendant stigma in Morris County. The Sheriff received his award for fighting addiction through the production of Hope One, a mobile access recovery system and the Hope Wing in the Morris County Correctional Facility for addicted inmates.
Morris CARES works to change the lives of those suffering from an opioid or heroin addiction. The group focuses on utilizing peer support throughout the community as a tool to help those in need from Morris County.

Morris County: Knock Out Opiate Abuse Day, An Example of Collective ImpactOctober 6, 2017
Hundreds of Morris County residents, law enforcement, health professionals from Atlantic Health System and Saint Clare’s Hospitals, schools, municipal alliance committees and churches joined efforts to bring attention to the opioid crisis facing the state and the steps residents can take to halt this epidemic.
In its second year, Knock Out Opioid Abuse Day increases understanding of the opioid crisis through a mobilization effort with a dual focus: educating physicians and raising awareness in the community. Many partners come together to plan and lead this awareness and educational activity.
Partners of the North Jersey Health Collaborative joined with the New Jersey Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey on October 6, 2017. The Coalition for a Safe and Healthy Morris is the lead agency in Morris County, recruiting volunteers and organizing trainings. In neighborhoods throughout Morris County, students, scouts and concerned families blanketed their community with “door knocker” hang tags for the front doors of local homes. These signs contained an opioid abuse prevention public service announcement with information on the link between prescribed opioids and heroin abuse.
The Heroin/Opioid Epidemic is a priority issue for the North Jersey Health Collaborative, and the Collaborative partners attend the Morris County Opiate Task Force and the County Committee for a Safe and Healthy Morris. We are in the midst of an opioid epidemic in Morris County and across this land. According to the CDC, opioid pain relievers that are abused were most often obtained via prescription from physicians, and users of prescription drugs are 40 times more likely to use heroin. More than 33,000 people in the United States died of opioid overdoses in 2015, and the number of such deaths quadrupled from 1999 to 2015.
